Sondra Barrett sheds light on life’s mysteries, from cells and molecules to wine. She earned
her PhD in biochemistry from the University of Illinois Medical School and completed post-doctoral training in immunology
and hematology at the University of California Medical School (UCSF).
Following her fellowship
Dr. Barrett remained on the faculty at UCSF for a decade engaged in cutting edge leukemia research. It was here she
began working the softer side of medicine, psychosocial support for children and families with cancer. It was also by
working with children that she discovered the power of the microscope for showing the art within life.
She says she fell in love wine from the inside out while artist-in-residence for Sterling Vineyards in 1984.
Photographing wine at all stages of life for more than two decades, interning at a Russian River winery during harvest,
and participating as advisory board member of WineSpirit since 2003, Dr. Barrett gained a unique perspective on the art and
spirit of wine. She shares that in her new book Wine’s Hidden Beauty.
Her photographs have appeared in numerous publications, winning awards from both Nikon and
Olympus and
are featured in several Napa Valley tasting rooms. Dr. Barrett is a nationally recognized speaker on mindbody and lifestyle
medicine and has taught at UC Berkeley, UCSF, Sonoma State, JFK University, California Institute of Integral Studies, Institute
of Transpersonal Psychology, Wisdom University, California Pacific Medical Center, Kaiser Hospital, and venues throughout
the United States. She has delivered unique wine presentations at the American Wine Expo, Society of Wine Educators,
Rudd Oakville Estate, Copia, Grgich Hills, Noetics Retreat Center and Napa Valley Museum.
Dr.
Barrett’s passion for photography, wine and the inner life of our cells is conveyed with humor on local TV, video and
her engaging presentations for the general public. In April 2010 she will be delivering a weekend workshop Cells and the Sacred at the Noetic Sciences Retreat Center in Petaluma and an evening presentation for Science Buzz Cafe and Copperfield’s
on Wine’s Hidden Beauty.
